Payne Statement in Response to President Obama's State of the Union

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement in reaction to President Obama’s State of the Union speech tonight:

“Tonight, I was pleased to hear President Obama outline ways we can create more ladders of opportunity for those working hard to climb into the middle class.  Raising the minimum wage, extending unemployment insurance, and increasing investments in education and job training are good steps toward growing our economy and reducing poverty in my district.

Payne and Freshman House Democrats Call on Speaker Boehner for Immediate Vote to Extend Unemployment Insurance

Washington, D.C.   – Today, Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) and 48 other Freshman House Democrats, led by Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), urged Speaker of the House John Boehner (OH-8) to schedule an immediate up-or-down vote to extend emergency unemployment insurance for 1.3 million Americans who lost their benefits due to congressional inaction at the end of the year.
 

Payne Applauds Senate for Taking First Step Toward Extending Unemployment Insurance

Newark, N.J. – Today, Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to begin consideration of a bipartisan three-month extension of unemployment insurance (S. 1845) on a vote of 60 to 37: 

“I applaud the Senate for taking the necessary first step toward restoring unemployment insurance for the 1.3 million Americans, including 90,000 New Jerseyans, who were dropped from long-term unemployment on December 28,” said Rep. Payne, Jr.  “Although this is a small victory for the hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans struggling to make ends meet while they desperately search for a job, we must keep the pressure on so that this temporary extension passes in the Senate, and the House follows suit.  Doing nothing is not an option.”

Payne Requests Presidential Proclamation Designating March 2014 National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) authored and sent a letter to President Barack Obama requesting he issue a presidential proclamation designating March 2014 National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.  One-hundred and forty-six Members of Congress signed onto the letter in support of Rep. Payne, Jr.’s efforts. Earlier this year, Rep. Payne, Jr. introduced House Resolution 69 designating March 2013 as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Payne Statement on the Passing of President Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a hero for social justice and a model of leadership for me and leaders around the globe.  Born during the years of apartheid, he was a resilient democratic leader, peacemaker, and inspiring fighter for racial equality.   President Mandela never let his 27 years in prison deter him from doing what he knew was right by ending apartheid and bringing democracy to the country that he loved
